Me, Myself and AI

April 8-May 8, 2023

Cambium Gallery

Astoria, OR

I am thrilled to announce the upcoming show "Me, Myself, and AI," featuring myself and Tatyana Ostapenko at Cambium Gallery in Astoria, Oregon.  I will be showcasing my latest series of contemporary figurative paintings that explore the intersection of mental health, modern technology, and traditional painting techniques.

The 2023 theme of Cambium Gallery is "co-creation," and they are interested in all manner of cooperative creative processes for generating artwork and artists who work in collaborative ways. For our respective series Tatyana and I incorporated an AI text-to-image generator to create reference materials for our paintings. The AI utilizes web-sourced imagery from around the world, tapping into visual representations of our collective experience. I am fascinated by the distortions and glitches produced by the AI. The mashups result in alien features and body mutations that spark new questions and relationships within my concept; how do you visually represent trauma in a way that is both personal and universally accessible?

I further transform these compositions through the physical process of putting paint on the canvas, filtering them once more through my own lens. Ultimately my aim as an artist is to create paintings that facilitate a shared sense of empathy with others who may see their experiences reflected in my work. Through the use of technology and a commitment to exploring the complexities of mental health, I hope to create art that is both thought-provoking and healing.
